Arkansas gubernatorial hopeful Sarah Sanders received a surprise appearance at a campaign event over the weekend by her ex-boss, former President Donald Trump.

“Great weekend on the campaign trail featuring a surprise appearance at one of my events by President Trump!” Sanders said in a tweet, posting a photo of the two of them reunited.

Sanders, who served as White House press secretary from 2017 to 2019, has remained close to the former president, despite other administration officials who drifted or parted ways from Trump.

Trump endorsed Sanders for governor in January, saying in a statement that she had his “complete and total endorsement.”

Sanders, 38, is seeking to replace current Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican who will have to leave office next year due to state term limits. Sanders’s father, Mike Huckabee, served as governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007. She has never held political office.

Sanders’s candidacy prompted current Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin to drop out of the governor’s race, announcing a run for attorney general instead.

Arkansas, a reliable GOP stronghold, is expected to secure a pathway to Little Rock for whoever wins the Republican primary.

Since leaving office, Trump has endorsed a handful of candidates ahead of 2022, including South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and GOP Sens. Tim Scott and John Kennedy.
